ISS was based in Siena, Italy. The Idrisi GIS software had been developed in the 1980s by a team of researchers at the University of Siena, led by Dr. Carlo Zapponi. The software was designed to be used for environmental and regional planning applications. It was one of the first GIS software packages to be developed specifically for use on personal computers. ISS was acquired by the Dutch company, ER Mapper, in 1996. ER Mapper was itself acquired by the Australian company, ESRI, in 2000. The Idrisi GIS software is still sold and supported by ESRI.
